Business Problem

Built in 1999, Carnes Hill Marketplace is a popular regional shopping centre south-west of Sydney. Located away from the coastline, and in a non-corrosive environment, the centre’s R22 packaged HVAC unit was in good order, however had suffered some loss of efficiency due to mild degeneration of its condenser coils. While still mild for Carnes Hill, the issue of degeneration for both large private and government HVAC users is a significant long-term problem. Many aging air-cooled systems suffer irreparable damage over time, and often the only solution is to replace these degraded systems, at large capital expenditure.

Carnes Hill needed a solution which would prolong the life of their R22 unit, and reduce their capital expenditure on its maintenance.

Energy Solutions' Answer

Energy Solutions is a leader in the field of protective coating technologies for the HVAC and heat exchange industry. The revolutionary Nanosure coating by Energy Solutions utilises nano technology to create thinner, longer-lasting protection for air conditioning systems, which adheres to all Australian environmental standards.

After consultation with Grosvenor Sustainability (a specialist consulting firm, focused on energy and water usage reduction), Carnes Hill was encouraged to consider Nanosure for reducing their ongoing energy costs and improving their energy efficiency. Subsequently, Nanosure coating was applied to their 90 kW APAC rooftop packaged unit, with minimal disruption to their HVAC. As only 50% of the system needed to be shut down during the process, Carnes Hill was able to carry on with business as usual. As access was required only to the site, and not internally or through the office, works were carried out without disruption to the marketplace’s personnel.

Through rigorous measurement and verification, it was discovered that energy savings achieved thanks to the Nanosure protection continued to improve beyond expectations, as the ambient temperature increased. It was determined, in fact, that as the ambient temperature continued to rise, the protective coating continued to exceed expected results.

Furthermore, the life expectancy of Carne Hill’s R22 unit has now been extended by up to 7 years, while the marketplace will see a return on their initial investment in less than 15 months.
