Key outcomes

  • Savings in excess of $100,000 per year in lighting, power and heating
  • 27% reduction in carbon emissions

The CQ CitiClub Hotel and event facility, located in the world’s most liveable city, is an eco-friendly accommodation and function destination for those visiting Melbourne. With 71 refurbished 3-star rooms and range of event spaces, the CitiClub Hotel and CQ Building offer guests a full-service solution for business or leisure. Undertaking an upgrade which would see the venue enhance its NABERS environmental performance rating would require careful handling of the building’s asbestos material, as well as the installation of systems which would reduce emissions and decrease costs for the venue.

ETS Solution

Environmental Technology Solutions (ETS) is a leading Australian provider of energy efficiency and sustainability solutions. Developing and installing environmentally-friendly systems such as combined heat and power (CHP), waste heat recovery, waste-to-energy and renewables technology, ETS tailors innovative solutions to help clients meet their emissions reduction objectives.
CQ’s CitiClub Hotel and event facility was the first recipient of a privately-funded Environmental Upgrade Agreement, financed by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation  (CEFC) and Eureka Fund. Retrofitting of the 1960s building on Melbourne’s Queen Street by ETS involved the installation of double glazing to the venue’s façade, enhanced lighting control, as well as the fitting of a tri-generation system which produces energy for the combined heating, cooling and power systems to service the entire building.
Designed to utilise normally wasted heat, the innovative combined power system comprises a 350kW natural gas-fired generator and absorption chiller, which recapture heat and produce heating and cooling for the entire building. In completing the upgrade, ETS overcame a number of logistical challenges including the safe removal of asbestos, and reused older equipment where possible.
At a cost of $1.3 million, the upgrade is estimated to have reduced the facility’s carbon emissions by 27 per cent, and in kind, lowered their energy costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars in the years since its completion. Subsequent collaboration with ETS and the utility provider has seen a further 30 per cent reduction in energy costs in this time.
