Business Problem and Solution

SCE worked with Southern Colour for several months to establish where they were using and wasting their energy in order to present them with the best possible energy reduction proposal.

The printing industry is an energy intensive manufacturing business sector and due to increasing energy and manufacturing costs, Southern Colour installed a voltage stabilisation unit from SCE to help effectively reduce these costs and their energy usage. The unit was also initially installed to correct power variations, spikes and improve overall energy efficiency.

Southern Colour’s voltage was coming into their factory at a high 253 volts before the voltage stabilisation unit was installed. Their equipment was designed to run at 220 volts. This equipment being run at a much higher voltage than originally designed for was not only wasting energy that the firm were paying for, but also causing their machinery to need constant maintenance.

The voltage stabilisation unit was installed in 2015 and Southern Colour’s voltage on site was reduced immediately from 253 volts to 225 volts, and progressively adjusted down to 220 volts. Southern Colour not only had an energy reduction and cost savings of more than 17% within the first month of installation, but have incurred no maintenance costs for their machinery since the installation.

“Southern Colour installed the SCE voltage stabiliser unit in early 2015, after going through a process of measuring our energy profile with the SCE team.  The voltage stabiliser was installed and immediately produced results beyond our expectations.  The monthly consumption reports from our energy supplier is a clear measure of how well the voltage stabiliser is working."  Tim Woods – Southern Colour
