Business Problem

AB Mauri is a leading international supplier of bakery ingredients who, as a firm, has a strong focus on the environmental, economic and social sustainability of their operations. Having already committed to a zero-landfill target in their UK & Ireland facilities, as well as having undertaken upgrades in their lighting, air compressor and power systems in Australia, AB Mauri-Cereform were eager to improve their energy efficiency with renewable energy solutions.

Energy and Carbon’s Solution

AB Mauri-Cereform had already made significant inroads to reducing their energy consumption and carbon emissions with previous upgrades to their operations. Efficient energy generation was the last hurdle in their quest for lower environmental impacts and cost savings. Cogeneration was ruled out as an option for AB Mauri-Cereform, due to the lack of heat as a biproduct in their Australian plant. Solar installation was the ideal solution in this case, and Energy and Carbon Solutions together with energy partner Autonomous Energy, built a 99.6 kW system for the firm, resulting in the reduction of their energy costs by almost $20,000 as well as the offsetting of over 137 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Special consideration was required when mounting frame for the system as the roof was uniquely, aluminium.  As demostrated in this video, the designed incorporated Schletter technology that enabled the frames to be secured directly to the roof support without disrupting its integrity.

A unique solar installation solution was created, which would allow the fitting of a 100 kW Solar PV system, without impacting on the integrity of the roof structure of the building. The project was assisted by $95,000 from AusIndustry’s Food & Foundry Fund, as well as $74,000 in Small Technology Certificates. A total of $169,000 in funding was provided to see AB Mauri-Cereform reach their energy, emissions and cost-saving goals.
